The Last Checkmate
"Checkmate" by Gabriella Saab is the thrilling story of a young Polish woman, who gambles her life and freedom on games of chess.

Maria Florkowska, who loves to play chess, is a member of the Polish resistance in Warsaw. When she and her family get captured by the Gestapo, she alone is spared from death.

The camp deputy, a sadistic German named Karl Fritzsch, discovers Maria's chess abilities and chooses to play against her to entertain the guards. He makes it clear, that he will send her to her death, when their matches ceases to entertain.
Over four horrible years Maria plays to survive, while she in secret plots to avenge her family's murder. As the war is reaching its end outside of Auschwitz' walls, Maria orchestrates the final gambit of her plan: One last game with her sworn enemy. A game, that will either lead to freedom or death.
 
"Checkmate" is the exciting debut of American Gabriella Saab, an author of historical novels.
