The Democracy, Indivisible
A collection of poetry and prose by Walt Whitman written during and after the Civil War. It includes excerpts from Whitman's memoirs of working in the Civil War hospitals in Washington, D.C., interleaved with poems about the war. It also includes much of what Whitman wrote about American Democracy and the idea of a great new nation founded upon equality and universal human worth.
