Red Blaze chronicles the accidental and unintentional fatalities that have occurred among thru and section hikers on the Appalachian Trail since its completion in 1937. Presented in the order that each incident occurred, as though one was traditionally hiking northbound from Georgia to Maine, these accounts capture the salient details and circumstances involved in each of these 41 individual incidents.
This book was a direct byproduct of a larger project published under the title of "Trail's End" from the same author which sought to compile recreational fatalities for the AT for all user groups (day hikers, overnight backpackers, and long-distance hikers). While the specific accounts of short-term trail users aren't included here, the statistics and information from these fatalities are included in the final chapter of the book summarizing and discussing the generalities of section and thru hiker deaths on the Appalachian Trail.
