Professor Duru returned to his homeland, Nigeria, with a strong ambition after living in the US for thirty-three years. He craved to westernize Africa. He saw his African civilization as outdated and repudiated it vehemently. He preferably liked to be called Mister White.

As time progressed in the book, Professor Duru's ambitions, actions, and arguments regarding the westernization of Africa were opposed by a group of Africans who strove to conserve the African culture. Although this group of Africans was unable to counter and dismiss Mister White's arguments with sufficient reasons, they also felt that they had to preserve even the remains of the African culture.

The book focuses on a wide range of things but has one subject. It depicts a world where most Africans find themselves in a complex dilemma.
