The story of a peasant boy in 17th century Bohemia who becomes a soldier for the Austrian Habsburg imperial army. During this time, he fights in battles from the mountains of Italy to the vast lands of Russia, and finds love with a Russia princess. Eventually, his life and that of his family are put at risk by forces beyond his control and against which he must go to war again to save.
