Westwood gained to public recognition when she produced garments for the store that she and Malcolm McLaren managed on King's Road, which became recognized as SEX. Their ability to combine clothes and music impacted the 1970s UK punk culture, which was led by McLaren's band, the Sex Pistols. She regarded punk as a technique of "testing whether one could put a spoke in the system"
