OTHERWORLD: BOOK ONE : STORM
ON AN IMPOSSIBLE WORLD, AIDED BY MONSTERS, TWO UNWLLING HEROES SET OUT TO DEFEAT A DRAGON.
SOUNDS EASY, RIGHT?
Aspiring manga writer Shinichi Aizawa has a hit with a fantasy series set on distant a world peopled by various species. When it is optioned, he is teamed with artist Midori Kano. Midori isn't quite certain how she feels about Shinichi, who is determined to maintain emotional distance in order to avoid being hurt, following a painful breakup. For his part, Shinichi is suspicious of her motives. It's not exactly the definition of a perfect partnership.
That's when the fox unexpectedly seeks refuge from a titanic thunderstorm and invites itself into both his home and life.
Fleeing from the creature, the writer and artist find themselves transported to a world which seems to mirror that of OTHERWORLD. When Shinichi is mistaken for Ryu, a legendary hero, he an Midori are dispatched to prevent a dragon from awakening and again laying to the world. They gain unexpected assistance on their quest from a shape-shifting goblin, a basilisk, a giant, an easygoing white tiger, a dullahan and a annoyingly vain harpy.
The arrangement works reasonably well, with the slight exception of Midori and Ai, the fox-turned-goblin, who have both decided that Shinichi would make a perfect husband and steadfastly refuse to let the issue rest. Then there's Anomi, a small orphaned cyclops who feels the three would make an ideal new family.
The quest quickly goes off the rails and pits them against the undead, the giant's arch-rival and her vicious gang, and distinctly unfriendly local flora and fauna. In addition, it becomes clear that an unknown party is closely dogging their steps, using high-tech Earth devices that should not exist on this world.
