Rodney Matthews III had a difficult upbringing. Raised in the East side of Kansas City, his parents had a hard time making ends meet, and tragic events happened frequently. As he approached the 8th grade, Rodney had become a fantastic prep basketball player, and as he worked his way through high school, he attempted to walk the narrow path to succeed and make his dreams come true, despite all the obstacles.
